    1. With red herrings than you can shake a fishing rod at, Scottish author Stuart MacBride has kept me guessing pretty much the whole way through Cold Granite.Aberdeen, Scotland is the setting, and in the midst of winter it s a bitterly cold and unforgiving location The icy chills stem not only from the weather though, as there is a monster of a serial killer stalking its streets The disturbing storyline of child abduction and murder, means it s always going to be a difficult read, but gosh it was [...]

    2. 4.5 stars rounded to 5 stars Hot Dog I have myself another fabulous series to dig into I love discovering these older series as there will be books waiting for me whenever I get the urge to revisit the characters In addition, there is something about some of these vintage novels that you do not see in books published today Some sort of IT factor that is difficult to explain Cold Granite is the debut novel and a great start to Mr McBride s Logan McRae collection The setting is Aberdeen, Scotland [...]

    3. My first book by this author and definitely not my last I became quite attached to D.I Logan McCrae and enjoyed many of the other characters too The story was excellent if a little too graphic at times I am quite accomplished at skimming the really upsetting bits so the nasty details did not bother me too much I found it to be quite neatly put together and rather realistic in terms of police procedure etc Another new author Hooray,,

    4. With DS Logan McRae back at work after spending a year recovering from a near fatal stabbing, he had been directed to ease into the job But when the call came in that a body had been found, and that body was of a child, he found himself lead investigator in a case that would consume him and the local police for the next few weeks The weather in Aberdeen was cruel an icy cold winter had attacked the residents with the bitter wind relentless in its fury The snow removed any chance of finding evide [...]

    5. Aye Shame He was fucking tasty in his day Quite the lady killer But we couldn t prove it Detective Inspector SteelThere is a lot to like in Stuart MacBride s police procedural, Cold Granite To start with, the story is sprinkled with humorous lines like the one above, delivered by likeable, almost quirky, characters Some moments actually made me laugh out loud, which I found surprising as I didn t expect it to be filled with such dark humor The author does a great job of balancing the humorous mo [...]

    8. Excellent reading Excellent combination of police procedures and forensics coming together to make for a cracking crime thriller After reading other reviews I expected this book to be graphic and gruesome and whilst the storyline centres predominantly on the hunt for a child serial killer, it s not as graphic as other similar novels I have read It has the right amount of detail, good strong characters and a few good twists and turns along the way Ultimately the book ends up winding a few crime [...]

    11. My reaction to Cold Granite is ambivalent Although I read the book with enthusiasm, I found it frustrated me in certain aspects, thus lowering my overall rating of it.Firstly, some positives the descriptions of Aberdeen and its wintry climate were well drawn I could almost shiver with the bleakness of the weather and the dreariness of those grey buildings Although almost stomach churning at times, the descriptions of the death scenes were graphic and intense, and I could almost smell the stench [...]

    12. Logan McRae is back after being on sick leave for over a year after nearly dying after an attack The first day could have started better when the news that a little boy that has been missing have been found dead in a ditch And, soon everything it will just get worse when another child goes missing I read book nine in the series recently and I liked it so I decided to read the series from the beginning It was a very grim book, I have previously stated that I don t like reading books that deal wit [...]

    13. This is Stuart MacBride s first novel and as debuts go, it s pretty tightly done Detective Sargeant Logan McRae is back reporting for duty after a year off on sick leave He was stabbed, multiple times 23, apparently in the abdomen by a murderer nicknamed the Mastrick Monster It took seven hours for a surgeon to sew DS McRae s inside s back together and he bears hideous scars and suffers from searing pain. But the book is not really about that Instead it s about the case he catches on his first da [...]

    14. Stuart MacBride s stunning debut novel Cold Granite propels DS Logan McRae into the detective hall of fame in no time at all.McRae is a likeable protagonist with a genuine back story allusions to his professional and personal life pre novel make this clear He is haunted by an injury sustained in a previous case and is burned from the breakdown of a relationship. The star is presented as fundamentally human He has hope, ambition and refreshing optimism when it s warranted, despite his demons He is [...]

    15. This is where it all started The first in the DS McRae series and the reader is introduced to Detective Sergeant Logan McRae newly returned to active duty after a serious stabbing incident, which we learn a little about as the story proceeds The bodies of a number of children are discovered, mutilated and sexually abused and in the gritty atmosphere of a dark and constantly rainy Aberdeen Logan must find the killer before the body count mounts As in all Stuart Macbride books the humour is dark a [...]

    16. Loved this Dark, twisted, disturbing, fast paced, cleverly plotted and great characters Logan is great as the main protagonist, has his flaws but also likeable guy Funny at times which is great as it deals with some dark themes Aberdeen is a great setting with its cold bleak climate feel which adds the chill factor to the disturbing crimes committed Cant wait to start the next one.

    17. Cold Granite is book one of the Logan McRae series by Stuart MacBride One the first day back after long absent Logan McRae caught the case of the death of a four year old boy Detective Sergeant Logan McRae after another child went missing he started to realise there is a serial killer on the loose in Aberdeen and needs to act quickly to find the killer The readers of Cold Granite will go on a rollercoaster ride following Detective Logan McRae murder investigation.I have read some books in this s [...]

    18. A police procedural of the or less hard boiled type Set in Aberdeen, Scotland return return Detective Sergeant Logan MacRae has returned from recovering from near fatal stab wounds to the Grampian Police Force to face immediately a dead child and the possibility of a serial paedophile killer Other dead children appear as well as a puzzling adult corpse, causing than a little confusion within the police ranks In addition, it s clear that someone inside the Grampian Police Force is giving inside [...]

    19. I saw The Bearded Wonder Stuart MacBride speaking at an event in Dundee, A Million for a Morgue, a few months ago He was engaging, hilarious and I vowed to read his series I learnt for example that the main character Logan is named after his nephew who lives in Canada I think and how many swear words on average are in his books a fair few.I really enjoy reading Crime fiction and this book definitely is high on my list of ones I have enjoyed Its set in Aberdeen, the Granite City, which I know a l [...]

    20. MacBride, Stuart COLD GRANITE 2005 My wife, Betsy, met Mr MacBride when we were attending the recent Bouchercon in Balti She was impressed by his comments on one of the panels and thought she d give his book a try When she finished it, she told me I had to read it It was terrific Well, it s an excellent first novel, a combination thriller cum police procedural MacBride is from Aberdeen, Scotland, and this is where the novel is set If you ve ever been to Aberdeen, you would know that most of the [...]

    21. DS Logan McRae is finally back at work after being carved up by a nutter a year ago He s still not 100% and is PTSDed to hell and back His first day back sees the discovery of the mutilated body of a little boy Things only get worse after that.Superb police procedural with lots of plot twists and turns.Highly recommended.

    22. I really liked the character of Logan McRae and most definitely looking forward to reading book number 2 in this series I m being a bit generous giving it 4 stars, some of the time I was looking for the book to move along faster But, having said that it is worth the time if you want to pick up a new police type book series.

    23. Despite the fact that I never read than one book at a time ever my goal is to have a really good book series waiting in the wings just in case I finish a book but don t have another that interests me That s complicated a bit because I also hate re reading a book, no matter how excellent it was the only exception to that rule was the James Bond series by Ian Fleming.Over the last couple of years, favorites like Lawrence Block s The Burglar Who series, the series by Spencer Quinn featuring Bernie [...]

    24. Gritty Scottish police procedural set in the granite city Aberdeen My heart sank when I read the opening of this book and realised it was dealing with the distasteful topic of the death and mutilation of very young children However, after the prologue there was no further description of the actual killing or mutilation of children and the body count wasn t too high.Logan McRae has just returned to work after almost being stabbed to death He s thrown into the deep end when the body of a young boy [...]

    25. At the end of last year I read Stuart MacBride s novella Sawbones, and up until that point I had forgotten what a wonderful crime writer he is So I promised myself that I would dig out the Logan MacRae series and re read them. Now for anyone unfamiliar with these books, they are not set in the bright lights of London, Edinburgh or even Glasgow They are set in the Scottish city of Aberdeen, maybe not the most fashionable of locations but they do seem to lend the stories a harder edge In Cold Grani [...]

    26. Cold Granite by Stuart MacBride. This is the 1st in the Inspector McRae series and my first It was recommended to me by another mystery lover reviewer.I found this thriller mystery quite involved Logan has his hands full with missing toddlers from the area and the worst is yet to come Dealing with bereaved parents and grand parents is a job he doesn t want or need The emotional upheaval is at times too much for the family when he arrives with news they never wanted to hear These missing children [...]

    27. First book in the series featuring DS Logan McRae I found the book a great read given the disturbing subject and will certainly be reading the next book. The characters are very well developed and the dialogue is excellent and humorous at times. With the Scottish setting, comparisons are always going to be made to Ian Rankin and the Rebus series After this first book I would say that it rates highly alongside Rankin.

    28. First time I ve read a book by this author and I loved it Admittedly it is very gruesome, with unnecessarily detailed descriptions of autopsies but the author tempers this with some great banter between the wonderful characters and a wicked sense of humour Can t wait to read the second in the series I just love Logan, the hero copper whose imperfections make him very endearing and DI Insch is hilarious.

    29. I m currently rereading the whole series As with lots of books, they re even better a second time I d forgotten what a delightfully slow build this first one is I m nearly 30% in and we still haven t actually met DI Steel yet She s lurking and been mentioned a couple of times, and when you know what a force of nature she is once she arrives on the scene this tactic is quite amusing PC Rennie isn t in the novel yet either Logan is arriving back to work after nearly a year off sick after being sta [...]

    30. Listening to this on audio was a real treat and despite the dark and nasty subject matter being investigated by DS Logan McRae I really enjoyed this story. It had everything you could want from a police procedural mystery, thrills, action, superb characterisation, dark humour. There were twists and turns and plenty of suspense.I felt like I was in the investigation with the team sharing the ups and downs It is very violent and quite sickening in places so don t expect the nasty bits to be glossed [...]
