    2. This generational novel is centered on 3 women 2 of them cousins from well to do English families with long pedigrees and the third, an Irish American Catholic hailing from Chicago, where her father, a physician with interests in party politics, has been elected to the U.S Senate who meet as first year students at Oxford in 1932 As the Thirties unfold, the reader is witness to the effects of the contending political movements of the era communism vs fascism on both cousins and its effects, both [...]

    5. Vee Lally and Claudia are all up at Oxford in the nineteen thirties and all go on to live different lives though the paths cross and re cross over the years The story focusses on Vee who becomes involved with politics and secret societies and finds the life of a spy glamorous until if forces her to make choices which will affect the rest of her life. This is an evocative and poignant story about friendship, the glamour of doing something subversive but it also shows the downside of such a life wh [...]

    7. Much political than I expected liked that very much. While her cousin Claudia is attracted to the German Nazi party Verity Vee is certain that only comunism can change and save the world she actually starts to work as an secret agent for Moscow And Moscow does not think that Vee should decide for her own when to quit her job Of course this is a so called women s fiction novel and one of the quite intelligent one I certainly won t stop to read each and every novel by Elizabeth Edmondson Read my r [...]

    9. DNF at 45%.The only emotion this book is stirring in me is anger It is nothing like what I expected, just political blathering in novel form.

    11. Well I didn t hate it And it was free through my kindle library so I would give it 2.5 stars if I could I like other things the author has written but this wasn t her best The main character, Vee, wonders after a series of mistakes that she just kept continuing to make Did one ever have the choice, in fact, or was it just one little step after another And there you were, at the edge of a precipice, or down a deep hole When had she become so joyless That s the story in a nutshell, set in all kin [...]

    12. This one was great I enjoyed the other books I ve read from her , but this was very satisfying and interesting.

    13. This book needed a better editortion jumped back and forth, characters popped up with little backgroundrambled quite a bit.

    14. I ve given this one three stars because it made me feel so depressed There is no doubt about it being a good book and the subject is an interesting one I had never contemplated that there might have been women spies drawn from the privileged 1930s Oxford undergraduates This author excels at describing those times and the location is clearly one she is familiar with However the structure of the book is confusing, beginning in 1938 on an ocean liner and rolling out a number of characters before sh [...]

    15. I have read two other books by Elizabeth Edmondson previouslyThe Frozen Lake and The Villa in Italy Both books had been my best read of that year I saved this book for a while since I love her books so much and had high hopes for this one Boy was I disappointed This book seemed to lead to nowhere in the end While I am used to the revelations of the last chapters in the other two books, this one left me flat and thinking something must be wrong Did someone remove the ending or something If you re [...]

    16. Heaven knows why this is showing with cover but without details Anyway this is a semi sequel to The Frozen Lake in that one of the characters from that has a bit part on Voyage of Innocence.Good read, following a group of Oxford students in the 30s through the politics of the period where intellectuals were, as it seems, either card carrying Communists or worshippers of Hitler, Mosley and the fascists There s also a brief mention of the Angels and the high powered maths which I read about in The [...]

    18. I enjoy Elizabeth Edmondson s writing style and am willing to follow her down some different paths This story, which begins on a ship crossing from England to Egypt to India, is mostly concerned wit the life of a young woman who is recruited by a communist spy agency while a student at Cambridge, and asked to live a superficially normal life while reporting to her mysterious handler, Klaus. She and most of her friends find some sympathy for the different political regimes competing in the build u [...]

    19. This is distinctly one of her best The author does paint characters with care in full color A fully enjoyable and realistic cautionary tale extolling one not to believe one s own propaganda. The Story was woven deftly and easily flowed The only reason it missed a 5 star is the ending She finishes with an epistolary Aftermath which was brilliant, but the actual ending of the prose felt abrupt. The only reason it took me such a god awful long time to read is because of the new puppy He is a true att [...]

    20. Despite a ghastly title unlikely to appeal to anyone under 70 my mother bought me this book , the insipid cover art and cheesy cover blurb, this story was told from an unusual perspective female Oxford student communist sympathiser in the 1930s that kept me turning the pages Interesting way of filling in some blanks at the end, though I would have like to know about how some of the other storylines ended up.

    21. Once you ve sorted out all the characters, and the time, this is quite an interesting look at three women, at university in the early 1930s, and how they get involved in politics It was a bit weird for me listening to the chapters where Claudia is convinced by Mosley s fascist party PThis is a very loose sequel to The Frozen Lake, with one character playing a small role in this novel You don t need to have read The Frozen Lake first.

    22. Only got 1 2 way throughI had started reading this book under the assumption it was a mystery Wrong It is a plodding tale about a vicar s daughter who goes to Oxford just before the outbreak of WW2 Certainly a dynamic historical period, especially in England and Europe Too many characters to keep track of, and none of them interesting enough to care to I kept waiting for the pace to pick up, but decided that spending my time matching socks might be better.

    24. A Page TurnerThis well written book was hard to put down and cost me lost sleep until I had finished I can t say I loved it, but I was compelled to keep reading until I found out what happened to everyone The timeline is complex so you have to pay attention, but everything does come together in the end, which is always satisfying Recommended.

    25. One of the author s best booksThis is a gripping novel Hard to put down. The main character, Vee, is caught up in all sorts of things as she attends college at Oxford University in the early 1930 s.What to believe, who to believe, this was a time of turmoil not only for Britain, but the rest of the world.Wonderfully written, superb ending, a MUST read.

    26. An interesting plot that suffered from overwriting Would have been a much better novel if 100 pages less, tightly written end edited An earlier book by a now favorite author who has mastered her craft in later books.

    27. This was a rather complicated story centred around three friends meeting at university and how they get involved with communism and fascism just before the war takes place in the 1930 s.

    28. another great read 1932 and Vee,Lally and Claudia meet at Oxford Here they join groups and discover how their lives in the run up to war are shaped.
