    1. Stand for the moment in the shoes of a boy whose mother has just been killed by wicked men, or walk the path of her husband who returns home a few hours too late to stop the killers Think the thoughts of a good man, a strong one, who will not yield to injustice or fear This book will shape your character, as many of L Amour s books do.Read and be strong.

    2. I enjoyed reading this book, but since finishing it, I m irritated with things left out I don t know why the silver mine story arc was or less abandoned, why the bear suddenly shows up only to disappear And why did LL introduce the possibility that the 2 dead miners were not necessarily dead, only to conclude the book without ever mentioning them again These seemed like such promising additions to the story as we get to the last quarter of the book, but they never materialize The opening scene [...]

    3. Louis L Amour really is a master storyteller There are very few surprises in Brionne The reader is kept abreast of the chase from all perspectives There isn t much mystery, but it is very satisfying to be on the trail, in the landscape and witnessing the skill of Major James Brionne Nothing confirms L Amour s storytelling prowess quite like the ending here L Amour leaves an intentional loose end but says what is important.I would like to man slap the idiot who writes the introductory blurb on th [...]

    4. Chapter 1Virginia The night brought a soft wind Seven year old Mat awakens his mother when he hears the sound of men along with the rustling of leaves Anne Brionne forces herself to think calmly as she remembers the threat of revenge of the Allard family after her husband, Major James Brionne, testified against Dave Allard who was found guilty of murder and hanged Anne commands her son to run out the cellar door to the cave and wait there until James Brionne, who is expected to return tomorrow f [...]

    5. Major James Brionne had war declared on him by criminals he d brought to trial.Brionne s house is burned, his wife killed With his son in mind, the Major abandons his political career with President Grant and seeks safety in the west.Only that doesn t happen.I love the feeling I get when reading L Amours s book, this one no different Whether it s being on a train with a wild fire headed toward you or on cliffs looking across the landscape trying to find the bad guys, it s all exciting.Add to the [...]

    6. This was surprisingly good I read this because it was laying on the table at work, and I was bored I ve never been into Westerns, but this was ok Passed the time and was interesting.

    7. Well I decided to attempt reading a western or Frontier Story as Louis L Amour apparently called his novels It s interesting The book is really short and the story seems simple It s kind of like watching a short movie I m only on chapter 6 and I think I ll finish it with a good view of the book It doesn t seem spectacular, but if I ever need entertainment that involves cowboys Edit Okie dokie I finished it It was really short I guess it was sort of entertaining I enjoyed the gunfight in the end, [...]

    8. This was a pretty good book but not as good as some of L Amour s other books I don t think he developed the characters as well as he could have But it was a quick, fun read Westerns are my guilty pleasures.

    9. Predictable yet enjoyable A quick read that ends happily It helps brace you for the next serious book you have to read.

    10. I enjoy a good western every now and then and you usually can t go wrong with Louis Lamour This was not my favorite of his, but I still enjoyed it.

    11. I really enjoyed reading this book It is one that I ve already read before but it never ceases to entertain me I love the plot and I just wish it was a little longer of a book James Brionne is such a cool character and I love how well described he is As a former United States Military man, he has so many useful traits and skills, and he uses them frequently throughout the book I also think it is awesome how the author describes the antagonists When I read this, I really felt a hatred for the All [...]

    12. A typical Louis L Amour, this is about a hero who isn t looking for a fight, but stands for what s right as he struggles with his own inner demons Always a pleasure to read his stories Main complaint about this one is the abrupt ending.

    13. Good readA book at the hight of this genre with all you expect from the author This is not prime literature but a very good read.

    14. these guys are such good folks with good morals Always follow the same general pattern, but they are basically squeeky clean Great to listen to on a family trip out west.

    15. Major James Brionne 33 retreats to mountain wilderness with son Mat, six when wife and mother Anne shot an attacker then herself, impressing Cotton Allard His killer gang burns her house in revenge for a brother s trial and hanging after Confederate war predations Author Louis L Amour includes the requisite feebler yet valiant female, history such as fighting a prairie fire from a train, but this is a slower example of his Westerns, less detail of clever resourceful techniques to conquer nature [...]

    17. Quick read, classic western I enjoyed this read, particularly as it takes place in a region I am somewhat familiar with Golden Spike, Promontory, Wasatch Front I am certainly a far cry from an aficionado, but there is a reason Louis L Amour is a household name He is a great story teller without the need to use violence, sex, or profanity Many of today s authors movie makers could take a few notes Book Nerd Challenge a book recommended by your dad.

    18. Your usual Louis L Amour Good guy, bad guys, a pretty girl, riding horses through the mountains, a mine, a storm, a shoot out This one had the extra element of a child, but I was a little disappointed that Mat didn t really play much of a role But still, a fun read, and the perfect length for my airplane trip.I would like to know why the cover picture on the book is never the same as what you find on good reads Even when I match up the ISBN number Frustrating.

    19. For such a short, fast book, this was actually a much better adventure novel than some of the longer ones I ve read recently In this story Major Brionne, a widower travels west with his son to start a new life, and they stumble across the men who killed the Major s wife Their paths collide in the Uintah mountains where a young woman is tracking down a mine she has supposedly inherited I like the fact that the women in this story are all pretty tough, including the deceased wife.

    20. Major James Brionne s wife is killed and his house burned down in an Old West home invasion His boy Mat, who has seen the perpetrators, survives Four years later, Brionne and the boy have gone west for a new start But the Allards, who burned him out, would still like to finish him offd they are on his trail The bulk of this book takes place in the Uintah mountains.

    21. During a break in of her home Anne Brionne sends her son to safety and then after killing one intruder turns a gun on herself to avoid rape Her husband and son move west seeking a new life On the train they meet a woman seeking her father s mine The Brionnes are pursued by people wanting to kill them.

    22. Fun story, like a young boy s adventure story than anything Short, quick, and enjoyable about a young boy and his father going out in the wilderness, looking out for Indians, and finding a silver mine.

    23. I really liked this book It was my first western and it was a really easy read The only thing that threw me off was all the things left hanging in the plot development at the end of the book Other than that I will read L Amour

    24. I have always loved this book Some of the plot is a little shallow and hard to follow I wish it would have been longer and detailed I want to know about Major Brionne and Miranda, what they were thinking and doing.
