There s a moment in this most interesting book that brought me up short, making me think afresh about the value we put on human life Has it changed since the 19th century The Yalda Crossing is the story of Captain James Beckett, his common law wife Harriette and her daughter Emily, and his adolescent son James It is 1832 Beckett, depicted as a former military man of some integrity, has travelled beyond the Blue Mountains to settle along the pastures of the Morroombidgee River These are the lands [...]

    2. On the front cover of this book it says, Compelling and important a major Australian novel and it s very true This is a novel to make you think, a story to touch your heart and an account of early Australia that rings very true Noel Beddoe brings Young James to life in a most compelling tale of a young man conflicted by life s choices and as an older man, haunted by his past I know the country in this book and I ve worked with the Wiradjuri community further west Beddoe s descriptions are accura [...]

    3. This was a really good book So understated but the tension builds beautifully Set in NSW in the 1830 s and also 1870 s i m guessing, it tells of a war between the aboriginal tribes and white settlers along the Murrumbidgee river And it consequences on the people involved Not enough people know about this history and the genocide that was practiced in these time I hope Noel Beddoes the author, continues to write books on this theme.
