    1. I listened to one novellette 4 stories I either disliked or wasn t impressed by any of them The best was Makeisha in Time by Rachael K Jones that was just OK The Breath of War took way too long to make its point I could never get my suspension of disbelief going When it Ends, He Catches Her was short, at least Ditto for Toad Mouth Covenant by Bear never grabbed me either None of them did The points were obvious just not presented to my taste. It s pretty obvious that the editor or those nominatin [...]

    2. This is a breathtakingly good anthology, full of powerful stories that were definitely award worthy The Breath of War by Aliette de Bodard is at the same time universal the protagonist s concerns include family and personal risk and particular It raises the question of how our creations embody our own conflicts When It Ends, He Catches Her by Eugie Foster is that astonishing thing, a zombie story that I don t dislike, and it does something truly powerful and moving Toad Words by T Kingfisher tak [...]

    3. The Long List Anthology edited by David Steffen 3.75 5 The stories in this anthology were very different in content, genre, and in how much I enjoyed them I think the stories in this anthology were all well chosen though as I think everybody will find stories in this one as they re so different The Breath of War by Aliette de Bodard 4 5 The setting in this story was really good It has kind of a fantastic vibe but this story is a science fiction story The main character is also really likeable an [...]

    4. Only two stories I liked here, Max Gladstone s, A Kiss With Teeth, an original ideea about a vampire in our time and I m not usually into vampire stories and from Rachael K Jones, Makeisha In Time, about a girl that can travel back in time, but with disastrous effects for her present life. From the other texts I didn t like the ideea, the style or the execution of the stories. So, this peculiar Anthology was definitely not in my zone of interest.

    5. I liked almost everything in this collection, but my favorite story was A Kiss with Teeth by Max Gladstone.

    6. As per most anthologies, the ratings for the stories within vary Some were great, some were meh, but overall this was worth reading.

    7. A solid collection of good short stories from 2014 I d already read many of them, in their original publication or one of several other year s best anthologies, but many worth reading again And several of the newcomers were well worth a read or two themselves The Breath Of War by Aliette De BodardThe story mixes science fiction spaceships, colony planets with a hefty dose of fantasy an apparently human civilization whose lifecycle involves animating carved stone, lamsinh, into breath siblings, o [...]

    8. 4 stars For those of you who don t follow news about the Hugo awards closely For the past several years, there has been a group of people upset that science fiction has been moving away from adventure style stories to literary fiction Specifically, they did not like that the Hugo awards have been going to women, LGBTQ folks, and POC In 2015, this group exploited a weakness in the Hugo nominating process and filled some of the categories on the ballot entirely with their own nominations, result [...]

    9. There were some very bad stories and some very good stories in this anthology When I say bad I do not mean poorly conceived, crafted, or written I mean it was of almost no interest to me as a particular reader Others have rated some of the stories I did not care for very highly and that is why I like anthologies You get breadth and diversity and this anthology has it in spades.I won t include any spoilers I will talk about a few of the stories and they are not in the order in which they appear T [...]

    11. Sad that I Bought This and Wasted Time on ItI am sad that I bought this book solely on that strength of the Hugo nominees mention The stories are sad and not inspiring And most I would not even call proper science fiction I skipped through most of these stories and sampled enough to determine that the book was not worth my reading in depth If you are like me and like traditional SF with some science and point to the stories then I think you will be very disappointed here.

    12. Solo algunas historias me gustaron de esta antolog a, recomiendo leer Spring Festival Happiness, Anger, Love, Sorrow, Joy The Truth about Owls The Vaporization Enthalpy of a Peculiar Pakistani Family We Are the Cloud

    13. Review also available at devinhurd.herokuapp singlIt s not surprising to find a collection of long listed Hugo nominees would make for a strong collection of science fiction stories But there honestly isn t a bad or even mediocre selection in this bunch The most striking thing aside from the polished, often Iowa MFA fueled prose is the scope and variety represented in this collection Taken as a whole, these stories cover a range of diverse characters and experiences along with science fiction th [...]

    14. I m choosing to review this book not primarily on the quality of the content but rather the quality with which it is presented The reason for this is that the contents are all reprints from the Hugo awards nomination process held in 2015 Essentially this is an anthology of the stories that didn t quite make the cut to have a chance at winning the award. The editor, David Steffen, produced this anthology through a Kickstarter project He quite clearly informed the readers that his main job was not [...]

    15. This book does what anthologies do best put in one place many of the stories you ve been meaning to read, in particular, Malik s Vaporization Enthalpy and Crosshill s LaPlace s Daughter The performances are great, especially that of Gladstone s Kiss with Teeth and Xia Jia s Spring Festival My favorite was Foster s tragic and transporting When It Ends, followed by Spring Festival As in many of the stories, the speculative elements of the latter are part of the background rather than the foregroun [...]

    16. These stories were ok Some of them I liked and some I didn t The ones that I liked the most were Toad Words, Makeisha in Time, The Truth about Owls and A Kiss with Teeth Otherwise I didn t really get into the stories that much I think they are supposed to be considered Sci Fi which could be why they all didn t appeal to me If you love Sci Fi I think that you would love this collection of stories.

    17. As it turns out this was exactly what I needed to get the foul taste left by Nod out of my mouth There wasn t a single story in here I didn t enjoy, and I ve suddenly found myself with an basket full of authors whose works I badly need of.Honestly, I can t recommend this anthology enough.

    18. At least thatOverall I had to give this anthology a five star because it was just that good All of the stories may not have been five star but enough of them were that they could carry the rest Well worth the time to read, enjoy.

    19. I m glad David Steffen made this project come to fruition, as most of the stories in this book deserve a chance in the spotlight As with most anthologies there are a few that weren t exactly my cup of tea, but overall the collection is enjoyable and refreshingly diverse in style.

    20. Lots of good stories in here, as one would expect Almost all I could tell why they were nominated, even if they weren t all quite my thing only one real dud Some of my favorites were A Kiss with Teeth, Makeisha in Time, Toad Words, and A Year and a Day in Old Theradane.

    21. So many good storiesSome are wonderful, some ok, just one I couldn t finish Some thematic links among stories and deft editing Giving this as this is one if the best anthologies I ve read in a long time.

    22. Excellent This collection of world class stories entertains and intrigues readers who might otherwise have missed out on the works of these talented writers Ken Liu s wonderful story alone is worth buying this anthology.

    23. Interesting collection of award also rans Some authors that I may seek out, many that I won t Science fiction has continued to evolve as a genre, I am not sure I like some of the directions in which it is going.

    24. This was a wonderful anthology that was definitely needed Though I was a little disappointed that the final story was a somber one, it was still a very enjoyable read overall.

    25. Absolutely fantastic collection of short stories I highly recommend reading this if you are a short story lover.
