    1. Erin Stead is one of my favorite illustrators She is so talented In this melancholy tale, her muted illustrations were perfect The story, however meaningful, seemed suited for adults I wasn t surprised that my children were a bit underwhelmed 3.5 stars

    2. A beautiful, quiet story, with beautiful, soft illustrations I do wonder though, if kids will react the same as adults to this story I will definitely be sharing it though.

    3. enough with these pretentious esoteric existential hipster picture books go away and please do NOT come back another day inevitably, i can already tell this one s gonna win nods awards stars etc and people are going to rush out and buy it and unless they are true book people you know who you are , they are going to give it to 3 5 year olds because in their heads, that s the only appropriate market for picture books don t get me wrong, this book has some lovely language, but it s the kind of stuf [...]

    4. Like a warmly sung ballad, THE UNCORKER OF OCEAN BOTTLES will wind its way around your heart, shining with tinges of loneliness, wonder, and not a little joy.Cuevas is a master of metaphor phrases like, messages written by a quill dipped in sadness or, his heart was a glass vessel filled to the brim, are brilliantly evocative and transform chantey into chanson. And Stead s illustrations Oh, my There could not have been a perfect choice to illustrate this book She channels the introversion of the [...]

    5. Beautiful story, beautiful illustrations.Great mentor text for show, don t tell Love the comparisons.Stead s illustrations make you pour over each page, long after it was time to go to the next one.

    7. I love this book so much I bought two copies of it One to keep and one to give as a gift The story is sweet and the illustrations are so beautiful and soothing It s a relaxing and lovely read Yeah, maybe it appeals to adults, but there are children who will fall in love with the pictures and story and remember it as they get older Recommended for all ages

    8. Such lovely language A sweet story of seeking and finding friendship And I always love Erin E Stead illustrations Swoon YAY for quiet books

    9. Wow I really, REALLY enjoyed this one When I was a young kid, my favorite picture books were the deep, quiet stories with the dreamy illustrations in favor of the spazzed out, sporatic, splashy stories that could induce siezure or trigger a bout of ADHD or both The Magic CarouselThe Runaway Flying HorseThe Maggie B The Conjure WivesThat very particular version of In A Dark, Dark Wood where in the dark, dark cupboard there is an evil spirit inside a dark, dark bottle Does anyone remember this on [...]

    10. The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles lives in a small house on a hill near the sea where he watches for the glint of glass in the waves It is his job to deliver any messages found in bottles to their rightful owner Sometimes that means walking only a short distance and other times he must go on a long journey to deliver them He wishes that one day he would find a message in a bottle that is meant for him, but he never does One day though, he does find a message with no recipient mentioned It is an invi [...]

    11. The eye catching illustrations, created with woodblock prints, oil pastels, and pencil, draw readers into the book right from the cover and title page and then onto the copyright page with its poignant image of a man sitting alone at a table, looking pensive, while his cat stares at a ball of yarn That mood is carried through the images for the rest of the story until he finally finds some reasons for joy The story itself reads like a tale told down through the ages, filled with wisdom and aware [...]

    12. This is a very quiet story for introspective children With a sweet open ending that invites imagined dreamy sequels.I read this to my 3rd grader and 5th grader, with the younger one clearly enjoying it But there were so many friendly touches, like the cat that wanders in and out of the pictures, that the older boy liked it too A lovely bedtime book.

    13. A beautiful quiet book that opens doors for daydreaming and imagination This one is better for child old enough to appreciate the nuanced storytelling What a terrific writing prompt and discussion starter this is Stead s illustrations are a lovely match for the text, extending the story in subtle ways Definitely a book that will reward with repeat readings.

    14. Bookseller JuliaThis is a lovely tale about loneliness, happiness, and possibility It s full of beautiful illustrations that could narrate themselves A combination that creates a touching story you will fall in love with.

    15. It was hard to rate this so low because Stead s illustrations are unparalleled in beauty But the story was ridiculous For this type of story done well read Somebody Loves You, Mr Hatch by Eileen Spinelli This book belongs at a Brooklyn baby shower and not much else.

    16. This is a beautiful story about a man whose job is to find bottles in the sea and deliver the letters One day he finds a letter with no name and it leads to a wonderful surprise I loved the dreamy, watery feel of these illustrations They perfectly fit the lovely story.

    17. This is a lovely tale about loneliness, happiness, and possibility It s full of beautiful illustrations that could narrate themselves A combination that creates a touching story you will fall in love with.

    18. One of my favorite picture books of the year I love illustrator, Erin E Stead and the story was completely charming. The uncorker of ocean bottles has the job to open any bottle found washed up on shore and make sure the message is delivered to the right person When a message washes up with no name attached, he tries to find who it belongs to and in the end finds what he most desires.

    19. Such and enchanting little story with beautiful language and delicate illustrations that work perfectly with the text I d love to see how my daughter reacts to it in a couple of years As an adult who hasn t stopped reading children s books, I enjoyed it a lot

    20. The illustration drew me to this book It is wonderful pen drawn pictures with chalk touches of color The uncorker spends his time looking for the recipients of ocean bottle messages He secretly hopes one day he would find one for him, but he has no friends or name One day, he found a message he could not deliver It turned out it was for him but he doesn t realize it.

    21. A gentle book about loneliness It made me sad, actually I wonder how kids would feel about this story, and what ages would work best Lovely illustrations, creative, and imaginative, three things I look for in a picture book This one will definitely work for adults and older kids

    22. The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles lived alone on a high spot with only one tree for shade He always kept his eyes on the waves, watchful for a glint of glass The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles has a very important job It s his responsibility to open any bottles found in the seawater and make sure they are delivered He wishes that he would receive a letter himself But he knows that s impossible when he doesn t have a name. When the Uncorker of Ocean Bottles receives a bottle with an invitation to a party w [...]

    23. As I read The Uncorker of Ocean Bottles by Michelle Cuevas I was blown away by the author s writing and story line This book in my opinion would be realistic fiction in that it could happen, but its not a true story I also believe that it would be a great read for K 5 This is a story about a man who feels he has no name except to be the Uncorker of Ocean Bottles He finds bottles in the ocean and finds who they are written to and will find them so that they can have their message It makes him hap [...]

    24. This was all I hoped it would be I haven t read any of Michelle Cuevas s prose before, but it was brilliantly restrained, avoiding easy parallels and resolutions The story ends up a kind of variation on the stone soup theme, but Cuevas has truly made it her own The ending is open ended and will allow for several different directions for interpretation Erin Stead did so many things here to ensure a complementary picture narrative I probably couldn t list them all She started it all with a cinemat [...]
