    1. Julia Defiant is an amazing second novel in a thrilling YA fantasy series, and is one that fans of the genre definitely need to get their hands on A lot of series start off with a great first book, only to fall short on the following books That is definitely not the case with this one Every single aspect of the novel was fabulous and just as fantastic as the first installment I read and loved the first book, Julia Vanishes, so I came into this one with pretty high hopes I m so glad to say that i [...]

    4. Such a good read I loved that we got to travel a lot in Julia Defiant I wasn t expecting that maybe because I didn t read the blurb, ahah The world building is simply stunning I love this story and theses characters so much Witch s Child s series is so unique and refreshing It s not about a princess who lost her kingdom or about a girl who s in love with some guy no, it s about friendship, family and magic and I love the complexity of all this Can t wait to read the final book

    5. Thanks to Netgalley and Knopf Books for a copy of the eARC in exchange for a fair review.Julia and the gang are back, although there are some new characters and new location Wyn is still on the outs with Julia, but he is hanging around Julia is searching for Ko Dan in order to get the book out of Theo Of course, assassins are after them because they want Theo and Julia trying to keep ahead of them Also there has been changes with her ability to vanish, now she seems to disappear completely and a [...]

    7. Catherine Egan has achieved the difficult task of writing a sequel that is not only as compelling as its predecessor, but even so Having won this novel from , I borrowed the first book, Julia Vanishes , from the library This series is a departure from my usual genres, and I m glad that I ve given it a chance I m eagerly anticipating the third book now Julia Defiant was a mature novel, with depth and complexity just as a sequel should be An action filled, complex plot kept the story moving swi [...]

    8. This is not a stand alone novel and probably should not be read as such as I discovered while reading it as a stand alone novel I won this through Giveaways thanks, by the way and didn t bother preceding it with the first in the series My mistake With that disclaimer, I should say that I am probably not the best person to review this book There was a lot going in this story A lot of characters, a lot of fantastical creatures and lands, and many interwoven story lines It took me a long time to ki [...]

    9. thanks to Penguin Random for the ARC Gah, okay I had high hopes for this one The first book in this series started pretty slow for me, but really picked up in the end, so I was thinking we were going to follow that vibe into Julia Defiant Sadly, I had the same problem read this as I did Julia Vanishes I felt like so much of this book was just filler and nothing really progressed Until the last 50 or so pages I felt like the plot didn t move I enjoyed the ending and there were some great moments [...]

    10. I won this book from First Reads.Julia Defiant by Catherine Egan is the sequel to Julia Vanishes and the second book in the Witch s Child trilogy This sequel is very strong and introduces many new conflicts for Julia and her friends As Julia begins to unravel and about her mysterious power, things take a very surprising turn This series has definitely changed course since the first book, and I am excited to see where the finale will take us next.

    11. This is the second in the Witch Child Series, a sequel to Julia Vanishes, by Catherine Egan Despite it being part of the same series and by the same author the writing style is different which is a good thing because it shows Egan stretching her literary legs proving she s got than the one book in her bag of tricks You have to love a female teenage heroine who has been created to adeptly handle what life keeps throwing at her It s wonderful when an author shows a girl fighting for herself rathe [...]

    12. So good I liked the first one but this one was much stronger the mythology and machinations are fantastic and just get deeper and deeper Julia is an astoundingly strong character deeply flawed and so self aware, and I like her so much even though she s not always a good person The ending was a whole lot of OMG and I really would like the third book now this volume moved this series from I like to must read territory.

    13. I received a copy of this book from Random House Children s Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

    14. 4.5 Stars Book 2 picks up a few weeks after the events at the end of book one, with Julia and her crew now working as body guardish types to Mrs Orche and her charges to try and protect baby Theo from the people looking to claim him This is not a standalone story, but instead the second book in a fantastical series, and desperately needs to be read in order for the world building and relationship dynamics to really make sense.I found book one to be a very slow start, taking me almost half the st [...]

    15. I absolutely adore this series I don t want to say that Catherine Egan s writing has improved because I didn t have a problem with it to begin with, but everything about this novel felt so much better written Her descriptions were lyrical and captivating, I love, love the imagery of the wish trees and the plot, I thought, was well paced much so than Julia Vanishes But what I really love about this story is the extent to which it feels unique Okay, yes, teen girl with special power, grappling wi [...]

    16. Review posted on Page Turners Blog on 6 14 2017 Julia Defiant is the second book in the Witches Child trilogy and as a new reader to this series, I found myself immersed in a detailed, magical world full of sights, sounds and characters like I ve never quite experienced One of the first things I noticed was how beautifully Catherine wrote descriptive passages The smaller branches of the trees are wrapped in twists of paper, and some of these little slips are blowing along the street, having come [...]

    17. 4.5 out of 5 StarsJulia Defiant by Catherine Egan is book two in her Witch s Child series and like its predecessor, Julia Vanishes, it is filled with wonderful world building and rich developed characters The novel takes places months after Julia Vanishes ends and ten thousand miles from Spira City, in Tianshi, capital of Yongguo Where Julia and her crew are looking for Ko Dan, who is the only one who can help save Theo by removing the fragment of the Book of Disruption that is bound to his esse [...]

    18. Julia Defiant is the follow up to Julia Vanishes , the second book in Catherine Egan s Witch s Child series Picking up almost immediately where the first book left off, Julia and her friends family coworkers have just arrived in Tianshi, capital of Yongguo in search of Ko Dan to reverse the dark magic that he embedded within baby Theo Using her unique abilities, Julia quickly uncovers new secrets that exist in Yongguo, and makes an alliance with another spy to find Ko Dan and attempt to save her [...]

    19. I requested this book off NetGalley not knowing it was part of the Witches Child series I don t generally make a habit of entering a series in the middle but honestly, I just haven t had the time to read the first book in the series before I started this one So unlike other reviews I have read, the extensive recaps throughout the book really did help.I finished the book in a couple of days Honestly it wasn t the greatest I have ever read but it was a good book As I am sure you will realise my wh [...]

    20. I received this book through a Giveaway First of all, Catherine Egan, how DARE you end the book like that Gosh flipping darn it, I wanted to see Julia do her whirlwind thing NOW deep breath I was worried starting this story, mainly because I ve never read the first book in the series But even though it would ve helped to know the details of the characters backstories, I never felt lost The dynamic of Julia and her friends associates was wonderfully complex, and surprisingly, she didn t suffer to [...]

    21. I received an eARC through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review When I started Julia Vanishes a year ago, I was reading out of obligation I d won the book through the First Reads program, which I d entered and won both by chance I ve never been a big fan of witch books, but the Witch s Child series has proved once again that I shouldn t underestimate the genre.Julia Defiant was truly unlike anything I ve ever read The story is set in such a magical but realistic world, one that pulls from [...]

    22. A girl who is a monster, or a monster in a girl Julia Defiant is one of those books that is tightly written in a sweeping arc that is meant to keep you guessing, and succeeds, with flying colors I haven t had the opportunity to read the first book Julia Vanishes , but will, in time In essence, this book is everything that High Fantasy should be Magic that is inherent in the world, and in creatures those who wish to allow that magic to thrive, and those who wish to stomp it out, along with those [...]

    23. I won this book in a recent contest for an honest review so here it is I just couldn t get into this book I m not sure if that has to do with the storyline itself or that it s 2 in a series I hadn t read the first one and it s obvious that you will need to start from the very beginning for things to make total sense some series not so much The book does have a lot of twists and turns but maybe too much I found myself having to go back and re read things just to make sense of the section I was re [...]

    24. I enjoyed this one a lot The hunting of witches in Julia s home town, the acceptance of witches in others makes for an interesting story The fact that magic usually has to be written down is another interesting point with this story Now, Julia herself is different, she can vanish, and finding out where she vanishes to and how is a major part of the story I was drawn into the story quickly, and it is a great read The characters are interesting and I am looking forward to reading the next installm [...]

    25. The suddenly on the other side of the planet thing was a bit jarring, particularly as there were sporadic flashbacks to the journey, but none that really made the trip seem to matter to me But I enjoyed the new setting and they way some characters took to it better than others The character development was probably the best part of this, filled with elegantly managed twists and quirks of human psychology Julia always feels a bit younger than her stated age and a few of her actions suited her sta [...]

    26. Julia Defiant is the sequel to Julia Vanishes and is a thrilling fantasy YA I found the sequel polished than the first in the series and could not put the book down The writing was well done I could feel Julia s emotions of insecurity, uncertainty, regret, betrayal, fear, and courage The characters were well developed, the plot thick, and I could honestly not predict what would happen next I m looking forward to the 3rd in The Witch s Child series I cannot wait to find out what path Julia will [...]

    27. Julia and her companions are in Tianshi tryiing to locate Ko Dan, who is responsible for putting a spell on a small child While following the orders of Och Farya, Julia suspects her employer of having hidden agendas. The novel is written in first person narrative and the plot is slow moving, as Julia s repetitive thoughts and observations regarding vanishing and her surroundings would have been suitable if she had been a 12 year old girl The extra pages devoted to the repetition could have been [...]

    28. Julia and her odd assortment of associates are now in Tianshi on the hunt for Ko Dan, the only one who knows how to undo the magic bound into little Theo s very being But Ko Dan proves elusive and meanwhile Pia and other unsavory servants of Casimir are looking to find Theo first And also, as it turns out, Julia herself for her vanishing powers have grown and they would be put to very good use in the service of Casimir Another good read in this highly original fantasy series, that ends with no [...]

    29. This is a brilliant second book in which the characterizations, especially of Julia, deepen exploring central questions of who and or what she is The characters have come to a new country on a mission and the world building which was outstanding in the first book continues to expand our understanding of this place. My only question is why I waited SO long to finally get this read I won t make that mistake when the third one comes out.

    30. I totally forgot to mark this book as read I can t even remember when I finished it But I really like this series, the audiobook is great, and this 2nd book did everything right I was harsh on my review of book 1, but overall I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes paranormal fantasy mysteries, especially A SHADOW BRIGHT AND BURNING by Jessica Cluess, THE BEAUTIFUL AND THE CURSED by Page Morgan, and even Cassandra Clare s Infernal Devices series.
