    1. WELCOME TO DECEMBER PROJECT last year, amy other amy tipped me off to this cool thing she was doing the short story advent calendar, where you sign up to this thingie here and you get a free story each day i dropped the ball and by the time i came to my senses, it had already sold out, so for december project, i m going rogue and just reading a free online story a day of my choosing this foolhardy endeavor is going to screw up my already deep in the weeds review backlog, so i don t think i will [...]

    2. I will fight anybody in a parking lot who doesn t like this story.Near the middle of this story we get a sort of stream of consciouness look inside how the main character feels when he s in public with his disabled son He feels them looking at him with sympathy, but not wanting to get too close nobody wants to catch what they have And he s angry about it.I started thinking about how we talk about people like the narrator and his wife as heroes, but look at what a toll it is, look at how it hurts [...]

    3. A powerful and moving story about a father describing his life to a psychologist as a fairy tale allegory.

    4. 5 5 Read the story HEREOnce upon a time, there was an angry guy, who hated the story he was in.What an incredible and heartrending story Fable by Charles Yu captures the essence of adult life, its individuality and parenthood, longing and responsibility, apprehensions and shortcomings all portrayed against the backdrop of some fantastical medieval land and time which is rife with magic and curses, swordplay and cottages But what kind of story could the man tell The man wasn t a good enough story [...]

    5. A therapist asks a man to retell his life story as a fable This short story explores how stories shape a life, and how if we re able to tell our stories allow ourselves to tell them then we can find a path to living It s free to read online at The New Yorker.

    6. Once upon a time, there was a man whose therapist thought it would be a good idea for the man to work through some stuff by telling a story about that stuff.Once upon a time, there was a guy who couldn t swing a sword and nearly peed his pants whenever he saw even a toddler size dragon, so he went to law school.Once upon a time, there was a therapist who wasn t going to do any good and cost too much, and it s not like the man was made of money Once upon a time, there was an angry guy, who hated [...]

    7. Great short story about a man trying to figure out what his story is and how he has ended up in a therapist s office Charles Yu peels the layers of the onion of the facades we wear and imagine ourselves wearing in our daily lives and takes you on a journey that you know is not going to be kind but is going to be the start of something new. This was fantastic and the only negative thing I can say about it was that it was not a full length novel. You can read this story for free on newyorker s websi [...]

    8. 4.5 stars Once upon a time, there was a man whose therapist thought it would be a good idea for the man to work through some stuff by telling a story about that stuff So begins this fantastic and fantastical short story by Charles Yu, author of the equally wonderful and equally meta How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe But while that novel explores the tropes of good sci fi, Fable is concerned with the nature of you guessed it fables and fairytales For, in the story, a nameless na [...]

    9. This is yet another flawless New Yorker freebie replete with wonderful art by Tom Gauld it s in the running for my favourite short story of the year.Charles Yu s story is about the heroes amongst us, like his protagonist who juggles two jobs to support a special needs son It s also about the burden of that mantle, reminding us that heroes are prone to resentment and anger as often as anyone else However, Fable is made excellent not by its plot, but by its effective framing device Yu subtly conve [...]

    10. Actual rating 3.5 5An interesting short story about the importance of facing up to your life and your problems A therapist asks a man to tell the story of his life as a fable Reluctant at first, the man eventually begins to see the importance of not running away from his problems.I liked the idea of using stories to make the man face his own story I think seeing your life in that way can make it epic and wonderful Yu doesn t really go into that, though, and I think that s where the story falls [...]

    11. We all have our own dragons to slay Sometimes, we lose the path, or just don t always recognize their shape, and sometimes we seem to notice too late There are a few, however, who manage to find their way.

    12. I don t usually review short stories, but this was recently in the New Yorker magazine, and it is the perfect example of a short story Perfect in form, challenging subject matter, allegory, and it s probably one of the top 10 short stories I ve ever read.

    13. a stunning little piece the sort of thing that makes you look at your own life just a little differently.

    14. An interesting short, less cynical and relatable than say, DFW s Good Old Neon , but a nice take on storytelling and therapy.

    15. Advent short story challengeKaren user show 4 has started an advent reading challenge of one short story a day which I love love love the idea of Whether it is doable in my crazy life remains to be seen and I m also a little late coming into it on day three However, it has made me look for free short stories and there are a bunch of websites if you just google One I love is where booktrust searchres they have a plethora of quality stories Only one problem is that they aren t all on yet and I ve [...]

    16. One thing about fairy tales is it has a very narrow way of looking at the world and at happiness Not all stories start with Once upon a time and end with Happily ever after not all characters are knights or kill dragons Once the fairytale framework falls apart because so many of these criteria aren t met in the story, the fairytale world literally falls apart when his surroundings fades away , you realize you re free to choose your own trail and write out your own story as you live it.

    17. And the man loved his wife To the extent that he knew how to love, anyway The man had a clumsiness about him, in his hands and in his heart He fumbled words, missed chances, and, despite his best intentions, was prone to mishandling fragile things Together they shared a quiet existence that was defined by well managed expectations Perhaps not the stuff of legends Not quite deserving of once upon a time But it was comfortable and honest.

    18. Should have known going into this that I wouldn t like it given the name Objectively speaking I thought it was good, just not for me It was moving and an interesting take on the subject matter.

    19. Read it and listened to the audio Really good story Kind of melancholy, but I understand why Very short, so have at it newyorker magazine 201

    20. Listened to the audio of the author reading it on the New Yorker newyorker magazine 201Damn, that s a depressing but good story.
