    1. Vivid and poetic I d add it to my books that should be movies shelf, but a movie would not be able to do the prose justice Reminded me a bit of When Marnie Was There There is so much packed into this 200 page book, and yet no question goes unanswered by the time you ve made the journey.

    2. E ARC from Edelweiss PlusCaroline Murphy lives in the US Virgin Islands, and is considered unlucky because she was born during a hurricane Her life certainly bears out this assertion her mother has left the family, her father s slightly younger illegitimate daughter has moved nearby, and she is always in trouble at school She does have an ally in the principal of her school, who knew her mother, but not only are the other students mean to her, her classroom teacher is as well When a new student, [...]

    4. Twelve year old Caroline Murphy lives a lonely existence on the Virgin Islands Not only is the object of much bullying from the classmates at her school, but her teachers often regard her as a bad seed and punish her accordingly Life has never been easy for this child, partly because her birth during a hurricane marked her as unlucky As she tries to stay out of trouble and figure out why she can see a spirit that seems to be following her around, Caroline becomes determined to figure out what ha [...]

    6. Kheryn Callender s debut novel Hurricane Child dealt with a variety of issues that any child may go through Callender was able to provide depth and reality based on her own island experiences, making you feel as though you were on Water Island Caroline is a teenage girls who is daily bullied by her classmates and unable to connect with the world around her Her birth during a hurricane has caused her a world of bad fortune and she never seems to get ahead Until she meets Kalinda and she begins to [...]

    7. 3 5 for me but 4 5 for the young kids I will DEFINITELY be handing this to A beautiful book It didn t resonate with me as much as I had hoped, but I think this is because this is not FOR me The voice was a tad younger than I usually enjoy in Middle Grade, for one, and I m not of Caribbean descent, for another. However I met Kheryn at an industry conference this year, and was SO EXCITED to meet them and get this book signed, because it holds a level of ownvoices representation that is SO important [...]

    8. Hurricane Child is a slow and beautiful story about a girl trying to navigate through her loneliness and the relationships in her life I really felt I was on the Virgin Islands with the visceral descriptions of the sea and town, the way Caroline moves through her world is so confident and natural, but tinged with a slowness because of her grief idk Kalinda was such a good character and I loved her way of speaking her thoughts and how deep she was the stuff she thought about reminded me of being [...]

    9. I was provided an advanced copy of this book by the publisher. What a strange, beautiful little book I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, though I had a hard time imagining a middle grade reader I would recommend it to Caroline s story is so stunningly sad and painful, and being inside her head is a poignant reminder about how lonely being a child can be, and how one event can take over your entire world But just when you think this book is too sad to bear, the light breaks through the clouds with ru [...]

    10. Caroline Murphy was born under a bad sign a Hurricane which has cast a shadow of bad luck over her life Told with glinting prose we follow Caroline as she confronts a maelstrom of woe from racism in her classroom, to inappropriate first loves, and the hunt for a mother who abandoned her.I read this in one sitting, lyrical and beautiful.

    11. I received a free advanced copy of this book at an English teacher s conference The story just didn t speak to me I never really got into it because it was too slow and plodding Beautiful cover that just doesn t translate into a beautiful book.

    12. This book I wish I could give it than five stars My heart aches now but this is one of the best and most gut wrenching books I ve read.

    13. Wow I ugly cried reading this book It was sad yet beautiful I hope a child reading this book feels the level of emotion that the author put into it.

    14. A moving story about identity, first crushes, family, friendship, belonging and finding your place in the world For all middle grade libraries and classrooms.

    15. There s an audience of readers out there who will know that Caroline is using their voices to tell her story Some truly beautiful moments here
